Pride in Self-Sufficiency
You’ve got this. You don’t need help. You’re independent, capable, self-made. Asking for help feels like weakness, so you keep carrying everything yourself – until you collapse under the weight.
In 2 Corinthians, Paul describes his famous “thorn in the flesh.” Three times he asked God to remove it. Three times God said no – because His power is made perfect in weakness. Paul’s response is stunning: “Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses.”
Our culture celebrates self-sufficiency. We admire people who “pull themselves up by their bootstraps.” But God’s kingdom works differently. He uses weak people to display His strength. He chooses the foolish to shame the wise. He calls us to interdependence, not independence.
When we refuse to acknowledge our need, we rob ourselves of God’s power and others’ support. Vulnerability isn’t weakness – it’s honesty. Asking for help isn’t failure – it’s wisdom.
2 Corinthians 12:9: “But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.”
What are you trying to carry alone that you need to ask for help with? Your self-sufficiency isn’t strength – it’s pride. God’s strength shows up in your weakness.
